Response: Is Paper Safer? The Role of Paper Flight Strips in Air Traffic Control

This paper tells us that Air Traffic Control hasn't changed along with the advancement of technology. Basically, because of reluctance on the part of the controllers to adapt to newer systems. The Controllers perform a safety-critical job that is currently producing safe results . However, the management wants to increase air traffic-therefore, they have assumed that by bringing in a newer system -- they can increase Controller efficiency.

Paper Strips vs Newer Solutions:
According to social scientists and the controllers, the new systems haven't truly captured the role of the controllers and the significance of the Paper Flight Strips in their job. Data entry tasks distract(unsafe) and slow them down(inefficient). Emphasis has been laid on the physical nature of the Paper Strip being associated with a real aircraft. Moreover, paper strips allow overlapping activities and transition from one group to the other easier.

My View:
I feel that they were nearly able to conclude that Paper Strips are more safe and efficient (Efficiency being an important factor for safety in this case). Since, the management wants to increases Controller efficiency, they can focus on other aspects of Air traffic Control.
