Re: UbiGreen: Investigating a Mobile Tool for Tracking and Supporting Green Transportation Habits

Summary

This research work focused on using technology to motivate a change to green transportation habits among individuals who have a pre-existing interest in taking action to lessen their impact on the environment. According to the authors, green transportation referred to any eco-friendly transit alternative to driving alone. They built an application prototype for mobile phones, called the UbiGreen Transportation Display , which they claim can support awareness of personal transportation activities, remind users of additional reasons for being green (e.g., financial savings), and also reinforce their commitment to ecofriendly behaviour.

Commentary

The results of this early-stage study, formative study inform the design of our UbiGreen Transportation Display are indeed interesting. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the visual feedback is enough to change people's transportation habits. A general concern that emerged from their research is the tendency of participants, and possibly real life users, to use the device as a gaming device, which was not what it was designed for. Again, if UbiGreen is introduced as a recommendation system that suggests alternative forms of transportation based on one's personal trip history, there is the possibility of cheating by users to manipulate the feedback processes. Future research should seek to address this.
