UbiGreen - Investigating a Mobile Tool for tracking and Supporting Green Transporatation Habits

This paper is about a Ubigreen mobile application that tracts and displays an abstract image of your greener means of transportation. The researchers conducted a pre-study to learn about why people choose certain means of transport and their acceptability towards a feedback application:
Why people choose to drive: Less time, flexibility, cost, and means of exercise.
Willingness to engage in eco-friendly travel: 61% of the people had adopted atleast one type of eco-friendly behavior. 63% had maintained these choices overtime.
Acceptability: 52% of the people were interested in a feedback system.

Ubigreen: The application displays the activity of the user as an iconic wallpaper.
One type of the iconic display is a tree and the tree grows leaves, flowers and fruit as the person uses more eco-friendly means of transportation. The added benefits of eco-friendly behaviour were represented as small icons, such as saving money, losing calories, etc

Results of the Field Study: It is clear that people enjoyed the experience and became more eco-friendly. Most were motivated by the progress of their iconic wallpaper and the curiosity of the next wallpaper. So it was perceived as a game. They enjoyed sharing their progress with colleagues and friends as well. With regards to transportation, users said that they would choose a greener means based on reliable transportation (79%), financial incentive(71%) and more knowledge about alternatives.

Review: This paper is a very good example of an application that can be modified for other eco-friendly activities, such as energy consumption. I predict that if there was a game like interface for each month they can inculcate this behaviour in a years time. There was a behavioural change article that we read and i found it interesting that most of the stages that were outlined in that article are covered through this interface at one level.
